What are the best road trip snacks?
Many snack foods available today are high in refined carbohydrates and sugar which can leave you feeling hungry, unsatisfied and craving more food.
When choosing healthy road trip snacks, it’s best to opt for ones that are low in sugar and high in protein. Travelling can be tiresome and boring so focussing on including this key macronutrient is important for keeping you full, satiated and blood sugar levels stable.
A good snack should have at least 7-15 grams of protein per serve. So if you’re having something like popcorn or a piece of fruit, pair it with a handful of raw nuts or a KOOEE! Natural jerky or beef stick.
Opt for snacks with low sugar, under 5 grams is ideal. Eating lots of sugary snacks is going to send your blood sugar levels skyrocketing and then dropping so quickly you may start to get tired, hangry and irritable, and nobody wants that!

What are some of the best on the go snacks?
When you’re on the go, it’s handy to have healthy, easy to grab snacks. Sometimes hunger can hit unexpectedly and you may be nowhere near a food stop or the available food options may not suit you.
As stated above the key is to make sure your snacks are nutritious and contain protein. Protein rich snacks that are easy to take on the go include KOOEE! Natural jerky or sticks, nuts, seeds, yoghurt, dips like hummus or pine nut pesto, canned tuna or salmon, peanut butter, cheese, roasted chickpeas and protein bars.
Are there any easy to make road trip foods?
There are several easy to make road trip foods that will keep you satiated and energised for a long drive.
Here are 4 suggestions:
1. Boiled eggs – are a great on the go, travel snack. One egg contains about 6-7 grams of high-quality protein. Eggs are rich in vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and antioxidants. Just boil 2 eggs per person the night before a trip, peel and enjoy.
2. Roasted chickpeas – are a wonderful option for vegans and vegetarians. They are a great source of protein and fibre so they help to keep you full and satiated.
Our favourite way to roast them is to rinse and drain a 400 gram can of chickpeas. Spread the chickpeas on a kitchen towel and pat them dry. Remove any loose skins (this is optional but does make the texture nicer). Transfer the dried chickpeas to a baking sheet and toss them with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, ½ teaspoon of paprika, ½ teaspoon cumin, and a generous pinch of salt. You can cook the chickpeas in an oven at 180º for 30-45 minutes, let them cool, and then throw them in a reusable bag to enjoy on the go.
3. Homemade trail mix – Nuts are a wonderful source of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats and protein. They offer a wide-range of cardiovascular and metabolic health benefits.
Try this recipe for a healthy trail mix:
- 2 tbsp dried cranberries
- ¼ cup raw walnuts
- ¼ cup almonds
- ¼ cup brazil nuts
- ¼ cup cashews
- ¼ cup macadamia
- 2 tbsp dark choc chips
4. Chopped up vegetable sticks – such as carrots, cucumber, capsicum and celery are wonderful snacks when paired with a source of protein such as hummus or peanut butter.
Are there any healthy snacks on a plane?
Just like with road trips you might like to prepare snacks for plane trips as well. We all know that some plane food can be a bit bland and for lack of a better word distasteful. Bringing your own snacks means that if food isn’t to your liking, you don’t have to starve!
There is nothing stopping you from taking a few easy to pack snacks with you such as one from the Top 10 travel snacks list or even a couple of containers or reusable snap bags with some of your favourite snacks. For kids it’s fun to pack a bento style lunch box with lots of their favourite snacks. This will keep them full but also occupied and entertained for a while.
